In this morning’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata showcased a new trailer for Yoshi’s New Island for the Nintendo 3DS.
Yoshi’s New Island is the third installment of Yoshi’s Island, following 1995’s Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island and 2006’s Yoshi’s Island DS, although Yoshi has starred in other non-Yoshi’s island games such as Yoshi’s Story, Yoshi’s Topsy-Turvy and Yoshi Touch & Go.
The new installment features many of the tropes that fans of the series will already be familiar with such as swallowing enemies and turning them into eggs, which can be used as projectiles against Shy Guys and other baddies, in order to escort baby Mario to the end of the level.
A new feature involves Yoshi swallowing giant enemies and turning them into eggs which can be used to destroy large, otherwise immovable obstacles.
What is uncertain is if the Yoshi transformations will be included in the game. Beginning in the first installment, Yoshi could find special areas where Yoshi will be able to transform into a car, a submarine, a helicopter or a digger, which can be used to access new areas.
The trailer also only shows Yoshi carrying Baby Mario. In the previous game in the series, Yoshi’s Island DS, Yoshi would also carry Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Bowser and Baby Wario.
What may seem troubling to some fans is that Yoshi’s New Island appears to bear a closer resemblance to Yoshi’s Story for the Nintendo 64 rather than Yoshi’s Island for the Super Nintendo. The graphics still contain a hand-drawn feel to it, but to many fans, the art style looks a little odd.
Yoshi’s New Island will be available in spring 2014. Check out the trailer right here:
