Nintendo confirms Cranky Kong as a playable character in “Tropical Freeze”

Weeks after Cranky Kong was spotted on the cover of the European box art for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo announced Cranky as a playable character in this morning’s Nintendo Direct.

In the trailer, Donkey Kong’s tropical island is being invaded by arctic Vikings called “Snomads,” who freeze the island and begin to build their own settlement. The mission of the game is to battle through the “Snomads” and drive them off your island with the help of Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and now Cranky Kong.

The trailer shows Cranky, similarly as Scrooge McDuck in DuckTales, can use his cane to bounce on otherwise fatal surfaces. The same way the Diddy Kong shoots his peanut gun and Dixie Kong’s bubblegum attack, Cranky throws his dentures at oncoming enemies.

The new trailer also introduces the new special move, Kong-Pow. By collecting bananas and filling up a Kong-POW meter, Donkey Kong and his partner can perform a Kong-POW move which defeats all on-screen enemies and replaces each of them with an item, depending on which character is your partner.0

Also shown is a new polar bear boss wielding a spikey mallet.

For twenty years, since the 1994 Super Nintendo release of Donkey Kong Country, Cranky Kong’s sole purpose has been to provide the game with sporadic comic relief as well as a little bit of direction when Donkey Kong needs it. Gamers will finally be able to see what Cranky is made of February 21 2014.
