In this morning’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave new details on the upcoming Kirby game for the Nintendo 3DS, Kirby Triple Deluxe.
The thirteenth platformer in the series, Triple Deluxe contains three games withing the game, similar to how 1996’s Kirby Super Star on the Super Nintendo contained eight Kirby games in one. The traditional side-scrolling portion of the game involves Kirby battling through enemies, smashing blocks and stealing enemies’ abilities.
One new feature is that Kirby will be able to teleport from the foreground of the game to the background, which will allow him to access new areas of the level and solve various puzzles. Enemies will often attack Kirby from the background to the foreground which adds a new layer of strategy for the gameplay.
While this is a brand new feature for a Kirby game, it isn’t anything that hasn’t been done years ago by other games. Nevertheless, this new feature is bound to look even better with the Nintendo handheld’s 3D capability.
Another new feature is Kirby’s Hypernova ability, which is an extreme version of Kirby’s sucking ability which is used to overcome various obstacles within the level. According to Iwata, over 20 types of copy abilities will be featured in Triple Deluxe, including four brand new abilities created just for Triple Deluxe.
The two other games featured in Triple Deluxe are “Kirby Fighters” and “Dedede’s Drum Dash.” Kirby Fighters” is essentially Super Smash Brothers only instead of different Nintendo characters you play Kirbies using different copy abilities. “Kirby Fighters” allows for four players to play at a time, although it is unknown if each player will need their own copy of the game.
The third game, “Dedede’s Drum Dash” stars King Dedede in a rhythm game. Players press buttons in sync with the music to make Dedede collect coins.
Kirby Triple Deluxe will be released in 2014. Check out the full Nintendo Direct here:
