With today’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has made it clear that they want Rosalina to play a major role in the video game company’s future.
Rosalina made her debut in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy. In the game, Mario meets the enchantress and her companions, the Lumas. Rosalina is the watcher of the stars, who uses the Comet Observatory to travel across the universe. In doing so, she assists Mario in saving the Mushroom Kingdom (and the universe) from Bowser.
This year, Nintendo announced Roslina as a playable character in New Super Mario 3D World, which came out earlier this year, as well as Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8. This will give the rising Nintendo character five major titles under her belt after Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel.
Rosalina’s battle mechanics seem to be like a fusion of Princess Zelda and Peach, with Luma assisting. In the trailer, Luma seems to battle alongside Rosalina separately. Although how the player will control both characters simultaneously is uncertain.
Rosalina joins a roster full of surprises, which include newcomers the Villager (from Animal Crossing), Mega Man, and the Wii Fit trainer. Sonic the Hedgehog is also confirmed to return as well as Marth from role-playing series Fire Emblem.
Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS will be released in 2014. Watch the full Nintendo Direct here:
